Beauty Blog: My new go-to BASE!

Up until recently I have always used foundation as my base. My skin is not the best, its red and blotchy in places, very oily and I have suffered from years of acne. During the last two years I have tried billions and billions of skin care routines and fabulous "miracle" spot treatments(that are not such a miracle) but now my skin appears to have calmed down and i only have a break out now and then (thank the Lord!!). This means that my skin has changed dramatically, however, it hasnt hit me that a change in products may help me out even more!

I usually use a considerably thick foundation, my favourite being Revlon Colour Stay Foundation for oily skin. During winter this helps me with red patches and covers up anything. But during summer I have found that this foundation feels slimey and sticky on the skin, meaning I would have to use more powder to set it! Which can look cakey and too thick for the summer months. After going abroad for three weeks my skin looks and feels amazing and it seems such a shame to throw on a load of foundation when my skin is at its best, therefore, I have been on the lookout for something more suitable and thinner to wear.

Since June I have been eyeing up Estee Lauder DayWear Plus Sheer Tint Release SPF 15, which I think retails at around £34. After trying it in Boots I immediately wanted it! But somehow I could not justify spending that much on something i just wasnt sure would suit my skin. I did some research and it turned out my best friend used to use this product and swore by it but agreed that 34 quid was a little steep for the small bottle.

Anyway, last week was my 21st birthday and this friend made a cute box full of little surprises, one being this beautiful little bottle of amazingness!! I was a very happy bunny!

After using the product for a week i have fallen in love with it! It squeezes out white in colour with tiny beads of tint. Once you work the product into the skin the beads burst and disperse over your skin leaving you with a healthy glow and a pretty decent coverage! I have redness around my nose and very veiny eyelids and this product manages to cover these imperfections! I use two pea-sized amounts of the product (if you have good skin you will probably only need a one!) with a large foundation brush to work it into my skin and my skin looks amazing and fresh after. I do set it with a small amount of translucent powder from Rimmel around my T-zone where I tend to get oily. I love the shine it gives to me skin especially around my cheekbones! And it also smells UNREAL! Very fresh, like cucumber!

The only thing i dont like about this product is that for lighter skin tones it may be a little too dark. Tinted moisterisers are supposed to work with your own skin tone to bring about the best result but i do feel that when my tan goes and im left with my usual skin colour (MAC NW20) this product may be too orangey for me. Oh and I also hate the price! My friend suggested that i only use this for nightime (as it is slightly dark and would look good over fake tan) and try to find a cheaper version!

Which brings me too my cheaper alternative...

Ive known about BB creams for a while after watching a few reviews on youtube by Bubzbeauty and others on how wonderful this products are. However they are not easily available in the UK (its an ordering off a website job me thinks!). So I was over the moon when CosmeticsCharlotte27 did a review on Garniers new BB cream!

I went shopping last week and managed to get my hands on a bottle for £9.99 in Superdrug. There were only two shades available, light and medium. I initially opened the medium and tried it along my jawline but felt it was too dark, which is unusual because I never really think of myself as a light shade. So I picked up the light shade and thought I would give it a try!!

The consistency, I feel, is rather gel-like. When you first squeeze a drop onto your hand it looks as though the coverage would be good but I felt this was not the case. The colour suited my skin brilliantly but the coverage was not the best, less than DayWear Plus anyway. So I found I had to use some concealer over redness and blemishes. The finish on the skin was pretty good, it did not give as good of a glow as Daywear Plus but i did like the effect. After setting the product it looks lovely and healthy and not too heavy for summer :) yayyy!

I am so happy I have found some new products for my skin so I am not stuck in my foundation-rut! I think i will stick to the Garnier product for daily use and use my DayWear Plus for special occasions due to the massive difference in price! I highly recommend both products depending on your income of course!
